User logs in successfully but is immediately redirected back to the login screen

Open a new TTY (CTRL+ALT+F1 through to F6) and then run:

chown youruser:yourgroup ~/.Xauthority

startx fails with repeated "Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1"

rm ~/.Xauthority*
rm ~/.ICE*
